The Missing Stone by Paulo Coelho

One of the great monuments in the city of Kyoto is a Zen garden consisting of an area of sand and fifteen rocks.

The original garden had sixteen rocks. The story goes that as soon as the gardener had finished his work, he called the emperor to see it.

‘Magnificent,’ said the emperor. ‘It is the loveliest garden in Japan. And this is the most beautiful rock in the garden.’

The gardener immediately removed the rock that the emperor had so admired and threw it away.

‘Now the garden is perfect,’ he said to the emperor. ‘There is nothing in particular that stands out, and it can be seen now in all its harmony. A garden, like life, needs to be seen in its totality. If we linger over the beauty of one detail, the rest will seem ugly.’

When to raise the white flag?

Six years ago, I thought I was the most intelligent guy on Earth. Mounted on an overwhelming air of confidence, I enjoyed the flairs of being on top. But as time swiftly slipped, hard realities started to come undone. I stumbled… I failed.

Perhaps an all-time perplexity of life is knowing how and when to win. You can ready yourself but surely a string of inevitable factors could derail everything you expected to happen. It could either wow or ‘dewow’ you. But that’s the ‘thrill part’ of it. It’s fighting without knowing how to win, and that is called passion.

Failing is never absolute. You can always retract at first and then later get back into the game. Just time your actions, think of its pros and cons. Open your senses. Take it from Coelho, the following is lifted from his book The Warrior of the Light:

"Do not be ashamed to make temporary withdrawal from the field if your see your enemy is stronger than you; it is not winning or losing a single battle that matters, but how the war ends."
